How to Set Up Automatic Payments for Utility Bills in Your Banking App

What automatic payment is and why it helps

Automatic payment (often called autopay) means your bank pays your electricity, water, gas, or internet bill for you every month. You set it up once, and after that, the money is taken from your account automatically. You do not need to open the app every month and enter the amount by hand.

This is simpler than it sounds. You can do the whole thing in a few minutes on your phone. If a step looks confusing, do not worry. You cannot break anything by tapping the wrong button. You can always go back to the previous screen and try again.

What to prepare before you start

Before you begin, find your most recent utility bill (for electricity, water, gas, or internet). On it, look for an important number called your account number (sometimes called a "personal account number" or "customer number"). This number identifies your home in the utility company's system. You will need it during setup.

Also make sure your bank's app is installed on your phone and that you are already logged in. An app is a program on your phone with a small picture, called an icon, usually showing your bank's logo. If you have not installed your bank's app yet, do that first — you can compare current account options here: /rakhunky-osobysti.

Step by step: how to set up autopay

  1. Open your bank's app on your phone — find the icon with your bank's logo on your home screen and tap it with your finger.
  2. Log in to your account the way you normally do — with a password, fingerprint, or face recognition.
  3. On the app's main screen, find the "Payments" section — this is usually a button or icon shaped like a banknote or an arrow, labeled "Payments" or "Pay".
  4. Tap this section to open the list of payment categories.
  5. Choose the "Utilities" category — this usually groups together electricity, water, gas, and internet.
  6. Find your provider in the list — you can scroll down with your finger or use the search box and type the company's name.
  7. Tap your provider's name to open the payment form.
  8. Enter your account number in the field provided — the same number you found on your bill.
  9. Look for a switch or button labeled "Autopay" or "Recurring payment" on this screen and tap it to turn it on.
  10. Choose which account the bank should take the money from every month — this is usually your main current account.
  11. Set the maximum amount the bank is allowed to take for one payment — this protects you, because the bank will never take more than this amount, even if your bill is higher.
  12. Check all the details on the confirmation screen — the account number, the company name, and the maximum amount.
  13. Tap the "Confirm" button at the bottom of the screen.
  14. Wait for a one-time code to arrive by text message on your phone — this is a short set of numbers the bank sends to make sure it is really you confirming the action.
  15. Enter this code in the app, in the box provided, and tap "Confirm" again.
  16. Wait for a message on the screen such as "Autopay is now active" — this confirms everything is set up correctly.

What to do if something goes wrong

If there is not enough money in your account on the payment date, autopay simply will not go through. The bank may try again later, or send you a notification. Your bill will stay unpaid — add money to your account and pay that one bill manually, and autopay will continue working the following month.

If your bill amount changes (for example, a heating bill is higher in winter) and goes above the maximum amount you set, autopay will also not go through. Go to "Payments" → "Autopay" (or "My templates"), find the relevant autopay, and increase the maximum amount.

If you want to cancel autopay completely, go to the same section, find the payment in the list, and tap "Cancel" or "Turn off". You can do this at any time, with no penalty.

Remember this one rule about one-time text codes: this code is meant only for you. Never tell it to anyone — not on the phone, not in a message — even if the person says they are calling from the bank. A real bank never asks you to read out a text code over the phone. If someone calls and asks for your code, hang up and call your bank back yourself, using the number printed on the back of your bank card.

If you run into trouble during setup, or you are not sure everything was done correctly, call your bank's official help line — the number is always on the back of your card or inside the app, in the "Support" or "Help" section.

In short: what you just did

Now your utility bills will be paid automatically every month. You can always change the amount, pause, or cancel autopay in the same section of the app.
