How to Transfer Money to a Card at Another Bank Using an App

You can transfer money to a card issued by a different bank right from your phone — no waiting in line, no visit to a branch. It takes just a few minutes. If you have never done this before, don't worry: just follow a few simple steps, one at a time, and it will work out.

An app is a program on your phone that gives you access to your bank account. To make a transfer, you will need your bank's app installed, to be logged into it, and the card number of the person you want to send money to (this person is called the recipient).

If you do not have a personal account with a bank yet, it is worth opening one first — you can read more about choosing an account in the personal accounts section.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Open your bank's app on your phone — find its icon (a small picture with the bank's logo) on your screen and tap it.
  2. Log in to the app the way you normally do — with a code, your fingerprint, or face recognition.
  3. On the main screen, find the button labeled "Transfer" or "Payments" — it usually looks like an icon with arrows or the word "Transfer".
  4. Tap that button to open the transfers section.
  5. Choose the option "To a card at another bank" or "By card number" — the exact wording may differ slightly depending on the app, so look for similar words.
  6. Carefully type in the recipient's card number — it is usually 16 digits, printed on the front of the card.
  7. Check whether the app shows the recipient's name (for example, the first letters of their first and last name) — this confirms the number was entered correctly.
  8. Enter the amount of money you want to send.
  9. If you want, add a short note to the transfer (for example, "Happy birthday") — this step is optional.
  10. Check all the details on the screen one more time: the card number, the recipient's name, and the amount.
  11. Tap the "Confirm" or "Transfer" button to continue.
  12. If the app sends you a one-time confirmation code by text message (SMS) or as a notification (push notification), enter that code in the app. This code exists to confirm that you are the one making the transfer.
  13. Wait for the message on screen confirming that the transfer was completed successfully.

Watch out for scam phone calls

Scammers often call and pretend to be bank employees. They might say something like: "We see a suspicious transaction on your card, please read us the code from your text message so we can cancel it." This is always a scam. A bank never calls you and never asks you to say a confirmation code, a password, or the CVV code (the three digits on the back of your card) out loud.

The one rule that defeats every version of this scam: if someone calls and asks you to say a code out loud, hang up immediately. Then call your bank yourself, using the number printed on the back of your card, and check that everything is fine with your account.

What to do if something goes wrong

Don't worry — none of the situations below can be made worse just by tapping the wrong button. You cannot "break" the app.

  • You notice a mistake in the card number before confirming the transfer. Go back to the previous screen (the arrow button in the top left corner) and type the number again.
  • You already confirmed the transfer and then noticed the card number was wrong. Call your bank's customer support immediately — the number is printed on the back of your card or listed on the bank's website. The faster you report the mistake, the better your chances of getting the money back.
  • The app shows an error message and the transfer will not go through. Check that you have enough money in your account and that the card number was entered correctly. If everything looks right and the error keeps happening, call your bank — an extra check may be needed.
  • You did not receive the confirmation code. Check that your phone has a signal, and wait a few minutes. If the code still does not arrive, go back a step and try again.
  • You are not sure whether the transfer went through. Open the "Transaction history" or "Statement" section in the app — it shows every transfer you have made.

Whenever you are unsure what to do, the safest option is always to call your bank using the number on the back of your card. Never call a number that someone sent you in a message.
