Guide: Payday loans

How to use microloans safely and avoid a debt trap.

1

Compare the total cost, not just the rate

On short loans the real annual interest rate looks very high because the daily cost is annualised. Also compare the amount to repay: how much you pay back on top of what you borrowed.

2

First loan free - read the terms

Many microfinance companies offer the first loan interest-free. It is a fair promotion, but only for new customers, a specific amount and term. Being even one day late cancels the promotion and the full cost is charged.

3

Repay on time or extend in advance

An overdue loan generates penalty interest and collection costs that can exceed the amount borrowed. If you know you will not make it, contact the lender before the due date and agree an extension.

4

Borrow only what you really need

A microloan is an expensive product. Keep the amount to the necessary minimum and repay as soon as possible - every extra day costs money.

5

Check the lender in the NBU register

Borrow only from financial companies listed in the National Bank of Ukraine register of financial institutions. Unregulated companies operate outside legal consumer protection.

Frequently asked questions

Microloans are issued by non-bank financial companies, as a rule for small amounts and short terms; they are usually arranged online and cost more than a bank loan. Both banks and financial companies that grant consumer loans are subject to the Law on Consumer Lending and to National Bank of Ukraine supervision, including the 1% cap on the daily interest rate. Each lender sets its own amounts, terms and borrower requirements.
Each lender sets its own loan amounts and terms, and they may differ for new and returning customers. The lender must publish the information needed to obtain a loan on its official website, and the total loan amount and the term must be stated in the contract. Compare the terms of several offers before you apply.
The lender may charge a contractual penalty (a fine or default interest), but charging both a fine and default interest for the same breach is prohibited. For a loan of up to one minimum monthly wage, all penalties and other payments for the breach together cannot exceed twice the amount you received, and the interest rate cannot be changed to your detriment; for larger loans, default interest cannot exceed twice the NBU discount rate or 15% of the overdue payment, and all penalties and other payments for the breach together cannot exceed half of the amount received. The debt may be assigned to a new creditor, and the lender may go to court. If you cannot pay on time, contact the lender before the due date: the term can only be extended by an additional agreement that both sides accept.
Yes. Before signing, the lender must assess your creditworthiness, and a consumer loan contract can only be concluded with your consent to access to your credit history information and to its collection, storage, use and sharing through credit bureaus. Each company sets its own assessment criteria.
Yes. Consumer lending is regulated and supervised by the National Bank of Ukraine, and financial companies that issue microloans must comply with the Law on Consumer Lending. The contract must state the daily interest rate, the estimated real annual interest rate and the total cost of the loan, and you do not have to pay anything that is not in the contract. Before borrowing, check that the company holds an NBU licence.
The Law on Consumer Lending caps the daily interest rate, meaning the total cost of the loan for each day of use as a percentage of the loan amount: it cannot exceed 1%. The cap was introduced by Law No. 3498-IX of 22 November 2023, with a transitional limit of 2.5% for the first 120 days and 1.5% for the next 120 days. The total cost includes interest, lender fees and payments for additional and related services, but not fines or penalties for late payment.
The real annual interest rate shows the total cost of a loan on a yearly basis and is calculated under National Bank of Ukraine rules. The total cost includes interest, the lender’s fees for granting, servicing and repaying the loan, and the cost of additional and related services; payments for breaching the contract, such as fines and penalties, are not included. On short loans this figure looks very high because the daily cost is annualised, so also compare the total amount to repay.
Yes. Within 14 calendar days of signing you can withdraw from the agreement without giving a reason, even if you have already received the money. You must notify the lender in writing (on paper or as an electronic document) before that period ends, and within seven calendar days of the notice repay the loan plus interest at the contract rate for the days you actually used it. The lender cannot demand any other payment because of the withdrawal.
Yes. You can repay the loan early, in full or in part, at any time. The lender is not allowed to charge any fee for early repayment, and such a clause in the contract is void. You pay interest and service costs only for the period you actually used the loan.
